"Foray" has an earlier meaning. What is it?

If you chose C, good job: the first meaning of "foray" is "a sudden invasion or attack." "Foray" entered English in the 15th century from a medieval French word that means "raider." It dropped out of use in the 17th century, but then was revived by Sir Walter Scott (author of "Ivanhoe") in the 19th century. The meanings "a first attempt at something" and "a short journey" came about after Scott was writing, but they are more common in English than the original "raid" meaning.
