- instep (noun)
- What does it mean?
- 1 : the arched middle part of the human foot2 : the part of a shoe or stocking that fits over the instep
- How do you use it?
- Abbie's instep was sore from running but she was excited to be training for the race.
- Are you a word wiz?
Which of the following do you think names another part of the human foot? While the instep is the top part of your foot, between your toes and your ankle, the arch is the raised area on the bottom of your foot. Meanwhile, the ball of your foot is the rounded part on the bottom of your foot between your toes and arch. The back part below your ankle is your heel, and your toes, of course, are out in front. We've been using all but one of these words to talk about parts of our feet for 600 years or more. "Arch" is the newbie. We've only used the word "arch" to talk about the foot's arch for about 150 years.
