When "bandy" was first used in the late 1500's, it meant "to bat (something, such as a tennis ball) to and fro." No one knows where the word "bandy" comes from, but the word's connection to games did not end with the original meaning of the verb. "Bandy" can also be a noun. As a noun, it refers to a game similar to hockey. In fact, hockey is believed to have developed from the game of bandy.
